The foreign-individual route collects identity, residence, tax identification, any applicable treaty information and a signed certification.
Before you start
Use this route only when the foreign-individual tax form is appropriate for your circumstances. Have accurate identity, residence and tax information available; verify any treaty eligibility before making a claim.
Steps
- Open Tax Information Required from Home. Answer the U.S.-person question using your correct tax status. If you are unsure which form or classification applies, get qualified tax advice before signing.
- In Foreign Tax Information (W-8), choose Individual when that is the correct route for you, then Continue.
- Enter Full legal name, Country of citizenship and the permanent residence address fields: Street, optional Apt, City, State/Province, Country and Postal Code.
- Keep Same as permanent address selected if it is accurate for your mailing address. Otherwise clear it and complete the separate mailing address, then Continue.
- On Tax Identification, enter the foreign tax identification number if applicable and your Date of birth, then Continue.
- On Tax Treaty Benefits, answer whether you are claiming benefits based on your actual eligibility. If claiming, complete the applicable country, treaty article, withholding rate and income/explanation fields for your circumstances.
- Read the certifications and confirm only accurate declarations. If signing for the account holder, state your capacity. Enter Electronic Signature and review Date.
- When the form is accurate and you intend to sign it, choose Complete Tax Information. Check Tax Information Submitted, then choose Return home.
What to expect
Check Tax Information Submitted after signing and submitting accurate information. Submission does not establish independent approval of a treaty claim.
If something does not work
- If the form rejects the residence address, check your actual country of residence and whether the selected form is appropriate. Do not enter an inaccurate address to bypass the error.
- If the date-of-birth check reports an age restriction, verify the entered date and seek help if the form cannot accurately represent your circumstances. Do not enter a different date to bypass the check.
- Claiming treaty benefits is not simply a preference for a lower displayed rate; verify eligibility before completing those fields.
- Submission does not establish that a treaty claim was independently approved.
- Use only the secure document collection or upload method supplied for this task. Do not attach tax identifiers, identity documents or financial documents to a general support message; ask for the confirmed secure method if it is unclear.
